Freediving Top 3 devices

The borders of the high tech world are expanding, and also freedivers can use the most advanced technologies to optimize their skills when training in or out of the water. In this article you will find a quick description of the top 3 devices that can help you improve multiple aspects of your breath holding practice.

To improve: on average, this is the goal of every freediver and spear fisherman. The improvement can be related to your performance or your comfort during the practice. How can freedivers train and test their improvements both in and out of the water?

I have always been extremely fascinated by the technological inventions that support freediving, and every time a new device comes along, I am so curious to understand its utility and potential that I have to get hold of it and test it.

I have chanced upon some definitely useless devices but I have also found others that struck me due to their applicability to freediving.

I have always thought that, in order to be really useful, a high tech device should be able to translate sensations into numbers or rules. This is because it is difficult to compare sensations (other people’s and our own), but it is much simpler to compare numbers. Numbers allow us to analyse objectively possible improvements, record the history and compare it with others.

Here are the 3 devices that I think are the most useful ones and that any freediver or fisherman should use.

Eq-Tool

Eq-Tool is a digital system designed and developed for learning and training equalization. By placing the device on the nose, Eq-Tool detects and records the pressure variations produced during equalization. At first, the freediver can understand what ‘force’ instinctively drives the air into the tubes while equalizing. Then Eq-Tool can be used to learn how to equalize in a more gentle and precise way.

EmWave

EmWave

EmWave is program that can be uploaded on the pc or mobile, and it provides feedback on the progress of your cardiac rhythm. Heartbeat is, among other things, closely related to emotions, stress and anxiety states.

The ability to enter a state of relaxation is always associated with the regularity of the heart rate.

The software designed and sold by Heartmath, initially used in the medical field to speed up and improve post-operative and traumatic recovery of patients, has then found a great use in sports.

Powerbreathe

EmWave

Effective and powerful breathing is at the basis of freediving performance. Powerbreathe was designed with this goal. The principle of operation is that of an exercise with variable load resistance: by increasing the resistance while inhaling air in our lungs, the inspiratory muscles work more intensively, resulting in a real improvement in breathing, both in quantity and quality. If you would like to tell us about other devices that you think are useful in freediving or spearfishing, please write a comment and we will be happy to test it and write a review and a technical sheet.

Soon we will dedicate a focus on each of them, especially on Eq-tool.
